How to Build a Face Mask Routine That Actually Works

·6 min read

Masking once a week versus daily, morning versus night, layering versus standalone — the right approach depends on your skin type and goals.

A face mask is not a magic fix, but used consistently and correctly, it's one of the most effective ways to address targeted skin concerns. The challenge is knowing how to fit it into your existing routine.

Start with frequency. If your skin is sensitive or reactive, begin with once a week and observe how your skin responds over two weeks before increasing. For normal to combination skin, two to three times a week is a good target. Very oily or acne-prone skin can often tolerate daily masking with the right formula.

Timing matters too. Hydrating and nourishing masks work beautifully at night, when your skin is in repair mode and can absorb actives more readily. Brightening and exfoliating masks are often better in the evening as well — some actives can increase photosensitivity. Purifying clay masks can be used in the morning if you prefer, especially before a long day.

Prep your skin properly before masking. Start with a clean face — residual SPF, makeup, or sebum creates a barrier between the mask and your skin. After cleansing, apply to slightly damp skin for better ingredient penetration and an easier rinse-off.

After removing the mask, follow immediately with the rest of your routine while your skin is still primed to absorb. This is the ideal moment for serums, followed by your moisturiser and, in the morning, SPF.
